Monopile pile foundation advantages/disadvantages

Currently on the market there are solutions for wind power pylons such as: PHC pile foundation, steel pile foundation, gravity foundation, monopile foundation, Tripod foundation, Jacket foundation, floating foundation, in which monopile foundation can be used in depth of 20 - 30 meters, suitable for hard clay, medium to tight sand, large construction equipment is required (crane >1,000 tons, barge/vessel >10,000 tons, piling hammer >100 tons).

According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Hung - Director of CTV WIND Vietnam Company, monopile pile foundation is suitable in relatively deep water areas, the water level is about more than 10m to less than 30m; has the advantage of fast construction, fast progress; The disadvantages are high cost, need for super-heavy equipment, high-tech human resources and with terrain like the Mekong Delta, the cost becomes very high, the design and construction are relatively complicated, because of the geographical layer. Submarine material is very weak and about 15-20m thick.

KS Nguyen Van Trung - Director of Huy Hoang Union Transport Joint Stock Company (HTL) said that because the geology of the seabed in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam is soft soil, the monopile foundation must be a monolithic column about 60m long. 10.0 - 12.0m in diameter weighing 600 - 800 tons, so of course, a very large crane, at least 1,600 tons or more, can afford and long enough to lift the monopile cylinder and drop it into the sea, along with it is a team of experts and seasoned workers who can perform this stage.
